About Susan Carlson

IMG_2580

I’ve won Emmys, interviewed the president and witnessed an execution, but nothing is as challenging as motherhood.

Or, nearly as rewarding.

For more than two decades, I’ve focused on building a career as a broadcast journalist and currently work as a TV reporter and anchor at NBC5 in Chicago.

In 2012, I made the decision to adopt a little girl as a single parent and it was the best move I’ve ever made.

I always thought my life would follow a path of: college, job, marriage, kids. Instead it was: college, job, marriage, divorce, more failed relationships, earning a Master’s degree while still working full-time, the “I want a baby and I’m getting older!!” anxiety phase and then, recovery from break-ups, personal growth, achieving independence, decision to adopt on my own…miracle.

I’m not claiming to have all of life’s answers; in fact, I have more questions than ever before as I navigate my way through a whole new world. Some days I feel absolutely clueless! But adopting my daughter is the one thing I’m certain I got right. Not only does she bring joy to my life, I feel like we are divinely connected and meant to be together. I hope by sharing a bit of myself I can inspire others to find their true path.
