I’ve won Emmys, interviewed the president and witnessed an execution, but nothing is as challenging as motherhood.
Or, nearly as rewarding.
For more than two decades, I’ve focused on building a career as a broadcast journalist and currently work as a TV reporter and anchor at NBC5 in Chicago.
In 2012, I made the decision to adopt a little girl as a single parent and it was the best move I’ve ever made.
I always thought my life would follow a path of: college, job, marriage, kids. Instead it was: college, job, marriage, divorce, more failed relationships, earning a Master’s degree while still working full-time, the “I want a baby and I’m getting older!!” anxiety phase and then, recovery from break-ups, personal growth, achieving independence, decision to adopt on my own…miracle.
I’m not claiming to have all of life’s answers; in fact, I have more questions than ever before as I navigate my way through a whole new world. Some days I feel absolutely clueless! But adopting my daughter is the one thing I’m certain I got right. Not only does she bring joy to my life, I feel like we are divinely connected and meant to be together. I hope by sharing a bit of myself I can inspire others to find their true path.

Susan! i’ve been following your work since you were a radio reporter (and since I was young enough to listen to the radio every day when my parents drove me to school). Its so so incredible that you’ve adopted a deserving, lovely, wonderful child. You’ve always been so kind and seem like such an incredible person, and this definitely will be hard, but I just wanted to say that you’ve made such a huge impact on people who haven’t even met you (like me!) so I’m sure your warmth will have a tremendous impact on your new daughter! Good luck, and i’m so excited for you!
